Gygel is called a spermicidal contraceptive since it kills sperm. It should be used along with a barrier method of contraception, such as a condom or vaginal diaphragm, in order to prevent pregnancy.
Keep out of the reach and sight of children. • Do not use Gygel after the expiry date which is stated on the pack. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. • Do not use Gygel if you notice that the container has been damaged. • Do not store above 25ºC. • Store in the original package in order to protect from light.
The gel should be inserted into the vagina using a Vaginal Applicator. Use with a condom • The gel should be spread evenly over a condom once this is on the penis. Use with a diaphragm • The gel should be spread evenly over the inner surface of your diaphragm which will be in contact with your cervix. Make sure you also spread it along the outside rim of your diaphragm to prevent any sperm from getting past the edge. • If using a diaphragm this should be put in place inside the vagina before sexual intercourse and left there for at least six to eight hours after sexual intercourse. • If you have sexual intercourse again during this time, you must apply more Gygel or another spermicide without removing the diaphragm. Warning: your diaphragm should not be left in your vagina for longer than 24 hours. There is no need to wash your vagina (douching) after sexual intercourse. However, if you wish to do so, you must wait for at least six hours after intercourse.
The active ingredient in Gygel is nonoxinol-9 2.0% w/w. The other ingredients are: methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218), Sorbitol solution (E 420), lactic acid, Povidone K30, propylene glycol, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, Sorbic acid (E 200) and purified water.
